Prof. Dr. Laura Maria Comella, Professor of Intelligent Embedded Systems at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, is developing a precise optical measurement system for the leaf area index (LAI). The aim is to better understand and organize forest ecosystems.

Goals

The health and sustainability of Europe's forests are increasingly under threat. This threat requires a shift towards more sustainable management practices and proactive measures to combat the effects of climate change. The leaf area index (LAI) measures the density of a plant stand. Continuously monitoring this is of great importance for assessing tree health. Current measuring systems are usually inaccurate due to the influence of the operator on the measurements or the lack of technical requirements for continuous monitoring. Although automatic and long-term measurement is possible with sensor technology that has already been developed, it is not suitable for certain nature of the tree. The aim of the "LAIsens" project is therefore to develop the first low-power optical solution for LAI measurement that focuses specifically on the dynamic adjustment of the field of view. Due to its size and design, the system can be used on large areas. The low energy consumption enables long-term use over several seasons. This new approach avoids the problems of previous technology. It improves the understanding and management of forest ecosystems in the face of evolving environmental problems.
