Prof. Dr. Christoph Steinbeck was appointed Endowed Professor of Chemoinformatics / Chemometrics at the University of Jena in the summer semester of 2017.

Goals

Theoretical methods in analytical, organic, and pharmaceutical chemistry (chemometrics and cheminformatics) have become much more important in recent years as metabolome research, chemical biology, or chemical ecology have flourished.
Appointed endowed professor Dr. Steinbeck has been a major force in the development of computational metabolome research over the past nine years. Metabolomics is a multidisciplinary field that uses analytical chemistry methods to observe the totality of metabolites - the small molecules of an organism. Among other things, this observation allows conclusions to be drawn about how organisms respond dynamically at the molecular level to changing environmental influences.
In research work, Professor Dr. Steinbeck's group is developing methods to elucidate the chemical identity and biological role of as yet unknown metabolites in organisms.
