Autonomous Learning Robots

Focus topic: Artificial Intelligence
Type of funding: Individual funding programmes
Programme: CZS Endowed Professorships
Funded institution:
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Neumann was appointed as Endowed Professor for Autonomous Learning Robots at KIT in January 2020.

Goals

Professor Neumann's research focuses on machine learning methods for robotics. His goal is to improve the state of the art in terms of data efficiency of the learning algorithms, to increase the complexity of the tasks that can be learned, and to expand the autonomy of the robot systems as well as the learning algorithms. The graduated engineer has been working on robot learning since his PhD at the Graz University of Technology. Most recently, he was a group leader at Robert Bosch GmbH and an honorary professor at the University of Tübingen. Before that, he was professor for "Learning for Autonomous Systems" at the University of Lincoln and assistant professor and head of the Institute for Computational Learning for Autonomous Systems at the TU Darmstadt.
