The "CZS Breakthroughs - Synthetics" call promotes innovative research projects at universities in the priority area of "Life Science Technologies".

The call focuses on research into the design of bio-based systems. The interdisciplinary research projects combine, for example, molecular biological, biochemical, biotechnological or genetic engineering methods with engineering sciences and computer science.

The project teams can pursue these goals, among others: Adaptation, design and synthesis of organic molecules, biological components or systems; development of paradigms for curing diseases; development of new biological production methods. Possible topics include organoids and artificial organs, synthetic biology, regenerative medicine and gene and cell therapy.

The projects are intended to create a link between life sciences and engineering and to advance personalized medicine through the development of new life science technologies. The research topics being worked on should have the potential to make the healthcare of the future safe, sustainable and efficient.

Who is eligible to apply?

In principle, the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung’s funding activity is restricted to the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia.
