Prof. Dr. Andreas Walter, Professor of Biomedical Imaging & Biophotonics, is researching the implementation of super-resolution cryo-fluorescence microscopy and its combination with scanning electron microscopy.

Goals

While diffraction effects lead to a resolution limit in ordinary light microscopy (Abbe Limit), the super-resolution cryo-fluorescence microscopy explored here enables a much higher resolution. The additional combination with cryo-scanning electron microscopy enables molecules to be imaged in their original cellular context and allows simultaneous analysis of the molecular organization and ultrastructural architecture of intact cells. This is expected to provide a deeper understanding of how diseases and organisms function.
