Expiring programmes

In 2017, the Carl Zeiss Foundation underwent a strategic realignment process and redesigned its funding programmes in connection with this. Some of the programmes from the years 2007 to 2017 are still currently receiving funding but these programmes will not be advertised again.

Young talent funding programme

In the years 2007 to 2017, the Carl Zeiss Foundation was committed to providing funding to young talent. In the “Young talent funding programme” advertised during this period, a total funding amount of around EUR 54 million was provided for
  • 291 PhD scholarships,
  • 122 funding awards for post-doctoral students,
  • 34 funding opportunities for junior professors.

Programme for strengthening research structures at universities

In the “Programme for strengthening research structures at universities” advertised between 2008 and 2017, the Carl Zeiss Foundation approved a total of 39 research structure projects, of which 12 projects are currently still receiving funding. The spectrum of topics of the projects which have received funding within this programme include applied photonics, nanobiomaterials and resource-efficient chemistry.

The objective of this programme was to fill the gaps in terms of “missing links” in interdisciplinary research fields and to remedy some structural deficits in order to provide groups of researchers working in an interdisciplinary manner at an excellent level with an innovative and scientifically promising research concept to enter the top level of research.

In total, funding in the amount of around EUR 35 million was provided for research structures.

Funding programme for endowed professorships

From 2013 to 2017, the Carl Zeiss Foundation advertised the “Funding programme for endowed professorships”. The objective of the programme was to establish new and pioneering areas of scientific focus by providing support to the organisations of the respective professorships. In five years of this programme, a total of
20 endowed professorships at universities and universities of applied sciences were approved for funding and funding in the amount of EUR 18.7 million was provided.
