SektorSim³ − Mobility, energy and heat turnaround in the neighborhood

Focus topic: Resource efficiency

The SektorSim³ project analyzes the interactions between the heat, electricity and mobility sectors in archetypal neighborhoods. Different actors, such as public utilities, municipalities or the housing industry, are taken into account.

Goals

Achieving climate neutrality in Germany by 2045 will require extensive electrification in combination with intelligently networked storage solutions and grid expansion in the building and mobility sectors.

Solution approaches and their ramp-up rates vary considerably depending on the neighborhood: for example, single-family homes can be heated very well with heat pumps, while high-rise buildings can be heated less well. And where there are many cars parked on the street, penetration of electric vehicles will take somewhat longer. This means that power distribution grids and storage solutions will also have to be expanded at different rates.

At the interface of energy technology, building physics, mobility, geoinformatics and economics, SektorSim³ therefore analyzes the interactions of the heat, electricity and mobility sectors for defined neighborhood types. In doing so, it involves different groups of actors, such as energy suppliers (municipal utilities), distribution network operators, municipalities, the housing industry and citizens. Questions regarding building renovation and heat conversion, grid stabilization, expansion of charging infrastructure as well as stationary and mobile storage technologies for different types of neighborhoods are answered in this way.
