Research transfer in scientific telemedicine

Focus topic: Life Science Technologies
Type of funding: Individual funding programmes
Funded institution:
  • Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena

The Prisma funding will enable Prof. Dr. Kai Lawonn, Professor of Visualization and Exploratory Data Analysis, to purchase two multi-touch monitors. This allows several people to work on a medical case at the same time.

Goals

Professor Lawonn's research group is investigating two highly relevant topics in medicine: on the one hand, the risk of stroke and, on the other, the risk of a blood vessel bursting in the cerebrum. For both branches of research, a software prototype has been successfully developed that supports physicians in making treatment decisions. Since such decisions often involve several physicians, the software is to be tailored to collaborations. For this purpose, the program will be extended in such a way that several people can work on a medical case at the same time or collaborate remotely. This will require, among other things, multi-touch monitors on which several physicians can work simultaneously. The goal is to develop for the first time programs for such research topics in medicine that can operate several physicians simultaneously in order to support and improve decision-making.
