An interdisciplinary team is researching a solution for the treatment of presbyopia. By use of newly developed intraocular and contact lenses, the lost adaptation of the lens for distance and near is to be restored.

Goals

The reason for the loss of vision in advanced age is the stiffening of the natural lens. Its shape and thus its refractive power can no longer be adjusted by the ciliary muscle surrounding the lens. Until now, the loss of near visual acuity can only be partially compensated by reading glasses, multifocal contact lenses or intraocular lenses. The aim of the newly developed intraocular and contact lenses is to control the refractive power of an artificial lens "quasi-naturally" via electrodes attached to the ciliary muscle. The lost dynamic adaptation of the lens for distance and near could thus be restored.
