Material systems

Focus topic: Resource efficiency
Type of funding: Large individual funding projects
Programme: CZS Applied basic science
Funded institution:
  • Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg

The Institute for Sustainable Technical Systems (INATECH) at the University of Freiburg is establishing a competence centre for the development of functional material systems with funding from the Carl Zeiss Foundation.

Goals

Functional material systems of the future consist of synthetic basic materials - for example artificially grown semiconductor crystals or fibre composites, whose properties and behaviour are determined by their internal structure. The special feature of the Freiburg research concept is that the scientists look at these material systems on different scales and during different periods of time. Applications of newly developed material systems can be found in particular in transport, energy and medical technology - for example in wind power rotors, batteries for electric cars or customised implants.
