Intergenerational transmission of disease: a pilot study.

Topic: STEM impulses
Type of funding: Individual funding programmes
Funded institution:
  • Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen

The CZS Prisma funding will enable Prof. Dr. Norbert Schmitz, Professor of Health Behavior, Prevention and Management, to conduct a pilot study as preliminary work for a larger multigenerational study regarding the intergenerational transmission of disease.

Goals

Health problems and diseases such as cardiovascular disease or depression often persist over several generations. Genetic factors often play only a minor role. Rather, there is evidence that the interplay of biological (e.g., cortisol, inflammation...) and psychosocial factors (e.g., social integration, nutrition, sleep...) contributes decisively to the intergenerational transmission of diseases. To date, empirical investigations of the putative mechanisms underlying this intergenerational transmission are lacking. A large-scale multigenerational study involving 3,000−4,000 participant:s will be conducted to investigate these relationships.
