Together with the city and university of Jena, Carl Zeiss AG and the Ernst Abbe Foundation, the Carl Zeiss Foundation established the German Optical Museum Foundation. The director of the museum holds a CZS endowed professorship for the history of physics.
Goals
The existing Optical Museum in Jena will be transformed into the German Optical Museum on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Carl Zeiss. To this end, the City of Jena, the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Carl Zeiss AG, the Ernst Abbe Foundation and the Carl Zeiss Foundation have established the German Optical Museum Foundation. The museum will continue Jena's optical traditions at its current location on a historic site in the centre of the city and preserve, research and present the existing collections. As part of its educational mission, it will promote knowledge of optics and convey an enjoyment of physics and the natural sciences. As a research museum, the German Optical Museum thrives on its links with science and research and serves as a platform for international scientific exchange.
The CZS supports the position of the director of the DOM as an endowed professorship for the history of physics and is active with representation on the board of the foundation. In total, the CZS has contributed over four million euros to the project and financed the endowed professorship until 2029.
