Data-driven simulation of flows on supercomputers

The professorship held by Professor Xiao plays a central role in the research plan of the SimTech Cluster of Excellence, which is embedded in the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science. The professorship also includes the management of a corresponding department at the Institute of Aerospace Thermodynamics.
Research topics include numerical simulation, such as that used for weather and climate forecasts, fluid mechanics and data-driven techniques. In order to cope with the large amounts of data generated in this context, this professorship is linked to the field of high-performance computing, which now also includes machine learning techniques.

Professor Xiao's appointment is supported by an additional doctoral position. Furthermore, funding has been approved for dual-career measures for Professor Xiao's partner.
