Bionic filters - Simulation-based design of additively manufactured porous structures

Focus topic: Resource efficiency
Type of funding: Project funding programmes
Programme: CZS Transfer
Funded institution:
  • Hochschule Heilbronn

The project aims to develop intelligent filters with optimized structures. The structures are based on nature's model and are intended to improve filter efficiency and energy requirements. One application example is the use in washing machines.

Goals

Filters clean air and water. They therefore play a crucial role in environmental protection. In fact, however, there are currently still limitations in their production. This is where the BiFi research project comes in, with a revolutionary approach aimed at making filters intelligent. For this purpose, research is being conducted into an optimized filter geometry that achieves maximum separation efficiency with minimum energy input. The interdisciplinary research team is investigating three applications: Indoor pollen filters, microplastic filters for washing machines and an oil-water membrane for vehicles. Market entry opportunities and transfer into practice are part of the project. A "Center for Additive Manufacturing of Porous Structures" with representatives from research and industry is therefore being established at Heilbronn University.
