Active control of the surface properties of implants (AKTIO)

Focus topic: Life Science Technologies
Type of funding: Project funding programmes
Programme: CZS Transfer
Funded institution:
  • Trier University of Applied Sciences

In order to achieve better healing of implants, the project is researching the active control of implant surfaces. Switchable macromolecules are used for this purpose depending on the phases of wound healing.

Goals

Implants as an interface to the nervous system are increasingly used in various applications. These are becoming smaller and smaller and achieve a better resolution. The interaction between cells and technical surfaces of the implants is influenced by parameters such as surface structure, mechanical properties, surface charge and chemical properties of the surface. In order to achieve better wound healing, the project is researching an adaptation of the surface properties of implants to the different phases of wound healing. To do this, the surfaces of an implant are coated with electrically controllable macromolecules and these are exposed to electrical fields. Finally, the cells are examined to see how they are influenced by these surface changes.

The results will be used to adapt the surface properties of an implant to the various phases of wound healing.
