With three newly approved projects in the CZS’s “Life Science Technologies” research focus area, the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung is strengthening innovative research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedical applications. The projects at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, and Aalen University of Applied Sciences pursue different scientific approaches—but they are united by the goal of advancing medical diagnostics and research through intelligent data analysis and modern imaging techniques.

At Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Carsten Hopf is developing new AI methods in the “AI-4-Spatial Multiomics Transfer” project to better analyze tissue samples from patients with multiple sclerosis and myositis.

At the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt, Prof. Dr. Oksana Arnold is researching transparent AI models for novel biosensors as part of the project “Explainable Models for Interpreting Data from Biological and Medical Sensors Based on 2D Materials.”

At Aalen University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Tim Dahmen is working on the AI-supported automation of a high-resolution microscopy technique as part of the project “Automation of Multimodal Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy.”

The three projects were selected through a competitive process and will receive funding for three years as part of the CZS’s Life Science Technologies research focus.
