02.07.2024 MINT Impulses Carl Zeiss Humboldt Research Prize awarded
This year's Carl Zeiss Humboldt Research Award goes to Prof. Dr. Kim Meow Liew from the City University of Hong Kong. His research work has contributed to the fundamental understanding of the fracture behavior of solids. Knowledge that is of great importance for the design of technical components and the development of new materials. His research group is also investigating the development of fireproof building materials and the recycling possibilities of building materials such as decommissioned wind turbines.
During his research stay at the Institute of Structural Mechanics at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Liew will be working on the development of new types of self-healing materials for use in transport infrastructure, among other things. For example, concrete can seal cracks under certain mechanical or chemical-physical conditions. This extends the durability of the material and reduces renovation costs.
The Humboldt Foundation has been presenting the award, which is funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, every year since 2022. The Carl Zeiss Humboldt Research Award is aimed at researchers in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology who are seeking to collaborate with specialist colleges in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate or Thuringia. The research prize is awarded to scientists whose research has had a lasting impact on their field, even beyond their immediate area of work.
