Preparation of the MSCA doctoral network Breaking Down Barriers Across Multiple Domains (BREAKTHRU)

Focus: Life Science Technologies
Type of funding: Individual funding programmes
Programme: CZS Plus
Funded institution:
  • Aalen University

The aim is to submit an interdisciplinary and international Marie-Skladowskie Curie Action doctoral network to the EU funding program Horizon Europe. A meeting of all participating groups will be held to prepare the application.

Goals

In the planned doctoral network, young researchers will be trained in multimodal imaging techniques. The focus is on the investigation of biomedical barriers (e.g. blood-brain barrier or epithelial layers in the intestine or liver), the dynamics of which are to be visualized on various scales - from the cellular to the organic level. Initial measurements will be carried out at the EMBL in Heidelberg using an electron microscope.

The doctoral network will train the next generation of imaging specialists. Innovative imaging platforms will be developed that make it possible to study the interactions of biomolecules and nanoparticles (e.g. nanoplastics or nanoparticles for chemotherapy) with biomedical barriers in real time. This will lead to a better understanding of the role of biomolecules and nanoparticles in health and disease.

Furthermore, the network provides access to experts and institutions across Europe. This strengthens European cooperation and contributes to increasing the competitiveness and innovative strength of the participating institutions and researchers thanks to the high level of interdisciplinarity. Another significant added value lies in the long-term promotion of the career development and mobility of researchers and the training of young scientists in a future technology.
