At Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Marco Binninger is researching how digitally networked planning and construction processes can significantly accelerate housing construction. To this end, international best practices are being examined and adapted for the German market in the form of a scalable production system.
Goals
Prof. Binninger’s DigiBauFlow project is investigating a holistic production system for new residential construction in Germany across the entire value chain—from planning to handover. The goal is to identify opportunities to increase flow efficiency and derive scalable best-practice approaches from them. To this end, the project integrates Building Information Modeling, data rooms, AI-driven approvals, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, prefabrication, and robotics. Based on this, a transferable system incorporating KPIs, governance, and process logic will be developed.
The central research question is how lead time and flow efficiency can be increased to achieve the target number of new residential units built annually in Germany. The goal is to develop an evidence-based blueprint for scalable residential construction in Germany that is compatible with the fee schedules for architects and engineers as well as the Public Procurement and Contract Regulations for Construction Services.
