CZS Research Groups for Earth System Modeling

The current profound ecological changes are caused by industrialized mankind. They have a major impact on life on earth. This is referred to as a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene.

Since the middle of the 20th century, exponential increases in various socio-economic indicators, e.g. water and fertilizer consumption, have led to environmental changes. In order to avoid environmental and systemic risks, there is a need to promote a social transformation towards global sustainability.

In order to better understand the complex interactions between human societies and the Earth system in the Anthropocene and to develop effective strategies for coping with global environmental change, the project comprises two research groups. The "Co-evolutionary Modeling" group develops integrated modeling approaches to better understand human behavior and regenerative land use practices. The group "Climate Change Risks" analyzes risks and impacts of extreme events and tipping points on the Earth system and human societies.
