Prof. Dr. Thomas Wolfers took over the professorship for Artificial Intelligence in Neural Systems Imaging at Friedrich Schiller University Jena on October 1, 2025. His research develops AI methods to address neuroscientific questions and better understand complex brain diseases.
Goals
The Chair of Artificial Intelligence in Neural Systems Imaging at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena focuses on the development and application of modern AI-based methods for neuroscientific questions. The aim is to use innovative methods to gain new insights into the functioning of the brain and into mental and neurological diseases.
The establishment of the CZS endowed professorship will create an important hub that links various disciplines, institutions and research approaches. The connection to the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG), which is establishing one of six locations in Germany in Jena, is particularly close. Here, the professorship opens up the possibility of embedding AI-supported research directly in an interdisciplinary environment and promoting new forms of collaboration between computer science, medicine, psychology and the life sciences.
In addition, the professorship assumes a central bridging function between Friedrich Schiller University and Jena University Hospital. It contributes to translating methodological innovations from basic research into clinical applications and thus sustainably strengthens Jena as a center for AI and health research.
