Automation of Multimodal Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (multiCLEM)

Focus: Life Science Technologies Transfer
Type of funding: Project funding programmes

  • Aalen University

The “Automation of Multimodal Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy” (multiCLEM) project is developing AI methods to automate a high-resolution microscopy technique, thereby making it suitable for use in larger studies and translational research for the first time.

Goals

Correlative electron and fluorescence microscopy (CLEM) makes it possible to study biological processes with very high spatial resolution. However, the method has so far been labor-intensive, slow, and difficult to scale up for practical use in clinical applications, for example.

The multiCLEM project is developing data-driven and AI-supported methods to automatically process, analyze, and efficiently store CLEM data. Through synthetic training data, robust image registration, and standardized data formats, CLEM is set to become usable for larger studies and clinical applications for the first time. In this way, multiCLEM lays the foundation for broader use of this powerful imaging method in biomedical research.
