CZS Auxiliaris: Funding for Ukrainian scientists

The "Auxiliaris" call for pplication enables refugee scientists from Ukraine to continue their work in existing working groups at universities and research institutions in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia for up to six months.

Focus and objective

With the call CZS Auxiliaris, the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung (CZS) wants to enable refugee scientists to continue their scientific work on an interim basis at a host institution in Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia or Rhineland-Palatinate.
To this end, universities and research institutions in the above-mentioned countries can apply to the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung for funding at short notice and without bureaucracy in order to enable scientists with Ukrainian citizenship to participate in existing working groups and projects.
The funding is intended as a short-term bridging to be able obtain long-term support from another funding agency.

Scope and object of funding

You can apply for a fixed amount of 20,000 euros in funding.

Approval is granted to the respective scientific institutions, which hosts the Ukrainian scientist. The funding period is six months and can start immediately after the funding commitment by the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung.

Eligibility to apply

Tandems consisting of a host scientist (so-called mentor) and a Ukrainian scientist holding a PhD can apply for funding.

Funding is limited to host institutions in the countries of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia.

The Ukrainian scientist must meet the following conditions:

  • Ukrainian citizenship
  • Completed PhD
  • Research in STEM fields
  • Current residence in Germany and until 24.02.2022 in Ukraine (Temporary Protection Directive, 2001/55/EC)
  • No other funding (double funding is excluded)

The application can be submitted in German or English. Official documents (e.g. copy of passport) can also be submitted in Ukrainian, unless available in English or German.

The application including all attachments has to be submitted in one PDF document without password protection or access restrictions regarding reading, copying and printing.

Selection and funding modalities

The selection process is carried out according to the principle first come, first serve.

Upon submission of all necessary documents, a decision is to be expected within 10 working days.

The host institution is responsible for evaluation of the Ukrainian scientist’s academic qualification.

There is no entitlement to funding. No justification will be provided for rejection decisions.

The funding will be transferred in a total tranche to the host institution.

The funding period is a maximum of six months, the funding ends at the latest on 31.03.2023.
