The ‘CZS Breakthroughs: Artificial Intelligence – AI in Health’ proposal focuses on application-oriented basic research at the interface of artificial intelligence and health.

Detailed information:

Focus topic: Artificial Intelligence
Programme: CZS Breakthroughs
Target group: Professors
Funding budget: 5.000.000 €
Letter of intent deadline: 31.01.2023
Full proposal deadline: 15.03.2023

Goals

The ‘CZS Breakthroughs’ funding programme facilitates the realisation of innovative concepts that are expected to produce internationally competitive research results. The current call for proposals is dedicated to the application of AI in health. Health plays a major role throughout a person’s life. This is where digital applications based on artificial intelligence (AI) can provide invaluable support. In its current call for proposals, the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung (CZS) is thus looking for projects that broach the issue of interdisciplinary research concepts at the interface between AI and health. The focus here is on algorithmic solutions from AI for problems in medical research. Examples of challenges in this area include exploring algorithmic tools to analyse, contextualise, create and publish health-related datasets. They should be applicable for disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. The projects must address one or more of the following CZS interdisciplinary issues: trustworthiness, resilience, data protection, scalable annotation, meta-learning and/or sustainable AI.

What are the application requirement specifications?

  • The project must align with the strategic orientation of the university.
  • The project must strengthen an established area of research at the university.
  • The project must contribute to long-term strengthening of competencies in the research area.
  • The university must contribute at least 10% of the requested funding as an independent contribution.

Who is eligible to apply?

In principle, the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung’s funding activity is restricted to the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia. The following universities are entitled to submit applications as part of this call for proposals (the number of applications that can be submitted is shown in brackets):

  • Baden-Württemberg: Freiburg (1), Heidelberg (1), KIT (1), Tübingen (1), Ulm (1)
  • Rhineland-Palatinate: Kaiserslautern-Landau (2), Mainz (2), Koblenz (1)
  • Thuringia: Ilmenau (2), Jena (2), Weimar (1)

Duration

The funding period is up to six years. The earliest possible project start date is 1 January 2024 and the project must start no later than 1 July 2024.
